MANCHESTER CITY F. C.
Manchester City Football Club, Founded in 1880 under the name of St Mark’s (West
Gorton), they became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and finally Manchester
City in 1894.
City played at Maine Road from 1923 to 2003 when they moved to the City of Manchester
Stadium, now known as the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City enjoyed some success in the 1960’s and 70’s, when they won the League
Championship, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup under the management
of Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison.
City struggled in the 1980’s and 90’s, culminating in relegation to the third tier
of English football in 1998. Ten years later, in 2008, City was bought by the Abu
Dhabi United Group and are widely regarded as being the richest club in world football.
The new owners have invested considerable sums in their bid for success. In 2011,
City won their first major trophy for years, the FA Cup and won the Premier League
in 2011-12, their first League Title for forty four years.
After a disappointing campaign in 2013-13, City sacked manager Roberto Mancini. City
go into the 2013-14 season under the stewardship of new manager, Manuel Pellegrini.
