Sunderland Football Club formed in 1879 and played in the top league of English football for 68 successive seasons or 80 years when the years interrupted by the war are taken into account. They were relegated for the first time in 1958.

Sunderland’s honours were won almost exclusively before the Second World War and includes 6 First Division titles (now the Premier League) and 2 FA Cups, with the last major trophy being the FA Cup victory in 1973. Sunderland have also won the second tier title 5 times and the third tier 1 time.

Sunderland now play their home games at the Stadium of Light, after moving from Roker Park in 1997. They have a fierce rivalry with Newcastle United.

After finishing 13th in the Premier League last season (2011-12) and with Martin O’Neill at the helm, Sunderland will hope to progress in 2012-13 and also be looking for success in one of the cup competitions.
